When many people think of the British Columbia interior, they think of retirement. And why not? The Okanagan is one of the best places in the world to retire, and the city of Vernon was named the sixth best place in North America to enjoy one's golden years. Most communities and neighbourhoods are small enough to be walkable yet have easy access to every amenity one might need, there are numerous retirement- and seniors-oriented living solutions like resorts and 55+ only apartment buildings, and there are any number of activities geared towards helping people enjoy their retirement as much as possible. One such activity that is extremely popular is, unsurprisingly, golf. Also unsurprisingly, Vernon is home to a number of world-class golf courses. We've put together an overview of them here for you:
Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club
Located just north of town, off Highway 97 lies the sprawling Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club, a hacker's oasis boasting 27 holes and an acclaim-worthy clubhouse menu. The main course has 18 challenging holes but is varied enough to be attractive to all skill levels in some way. With an additional 9-hole course, Spallumcheen is also a great place for a lunch round of golf or a more casual, less competitive practice round before hitting the clubhouse for lunch. This course often plays host to tournaments of all skill levels, so be sure to book your tee time in advance to avoid disappointment.
Undoubtedly the most luxurious and exclusive golf course in the Okanagan, Vernon's Predator Ridge golf course is renowned worldwide for its incredible 36 holes overlooking Lake Okanagan, it's practice facility, lodgings, and golf clinics. Predator Ridge is home to the elite Sparkling Hills resort, a spa and hotel built into the side of a cliff overlooking the lake. Better suited to leisure travellers and retirees, this Vernon institution is the perfect place to hit the links and then unwind in one of the many saunas after a great day of golf. The resort's two courses, the aptly-named Predator Course and Ridge Course, are award-winning monuments to the sport. The Predator course is often ranked among the best courses in Canada and has played host to the World Skins Game twice. The Ridge course was awarded the Best New Course designation among Canadian golf courses when it opened in the year 2010; overlooking lake Okanagan, the stunning views from this course are almost as good as the golf.
Vernon Golf and Country Club
What kind of local list would this is if we didn't include on it the illustrious Vernon Golf and Country Club? This local institution has been referred to as one of Vernon's "best kept secrets" and also offers one of the best places in the region for a bite to eat. While previously there were whispers that the pacing of the course was frustrating due to inexperienced people taking up tee times on the course, a new marshall system has recently been implemented that has greatly improved the experience for many. Since it is the resident local golf course it still has some challenge to it, but remains a comfortable course that every family member and skill level should still be able to enjoy.
Regardless of whether you come to the Okanagan for travel or for retirement, you can be certain that the golfing here is not to be missed. We hope this list helps you plan your trip to Vernon!
